Where Are Fonts Stored on Mac?

Mac user Fonts versus system Fonts folders, and how Font Book shows which is which.

Last updated

Macs split fonts three ways: yours in ~/Library/Fonts, shared in /Library/Fonts, system in /System/Library/Fonts. Installs default to your folder unless you pick Computer level.

Missing for one user but present for another means a user folder install. Font Book lists the location per font under its info panel.

Where macOS stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Fonts

Your fonts. Shared installs go to /Library/Fonts (admin needed). System fonts under /System/Library/Fonts stay off limits on modern macOS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install a font for all Mac users?

In Font Book change the install destination to Computer, or drop the file into /Library/Fonts with admin rights.

Why does a font show in one app but not another?

Stale font cache or a duplicate across user and shared folders. Validate in Font Book and resolve duplicates there.
