Where Are The Sims 4 Saves and Mods Located?
The Sims 4 saves folder and Mods folder on Windows and Mac, plus how to back them up and enable custom content.
Last updated
The Sims 4 keeps saves, mods, screenshots and settings together under Documents, in Electronic Arts, then The Sims 4. It does this on both Windows and Mac, which keeps backups simple: copy that one folder.
Saves live in the saves subfolder. Mods go in the Mods subfolder. If you just installed the game, run it once before looking. The game creates these subfolders on first launch.
Where The Sims 4 stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4
Saves are in the saves subfolder (Slot_00000001.save and similar). Mods go directly in the Mods subfolder. Paste the path into a File Explorer address bar to jump there.
~/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4
Same layout as Windows. Saves in saves, custom content in Mods. Use Finder Go > Go to Folder if Documents does not appear where you expect it (iCloud Drive setups move it).
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have no Mods folder?
The game only creates it on first run. Launch the game once, or just create a folder named Mods yourself inside The Sims 4 folder.
I put mods in the folder but nothing shows up. Why?
Mods and script mods are off by default. Turn them on under Game Options > Other, then restart the game. Also keep each mod no more than one subfolder deep. Deeper nesting is ignored.
How do I back up my Sims 4 saves?
Copy the whole The Sims 4 folder somewhere safe. Restoring a single Slot file from the saves subfolder brings back one household, but the full folder also preserves mods, gallery and settings.
