Where Is the BBEdit Support Folder?

BBEdit keeps application support files in your user Library on macOS. This folder holds setup, packages and custom resources.

Last updated

BBEdit uses the standard macOS Application Support folder for active support files. It contains language modules, scripts, stationery, text filters and backup settings.

The folder is separate from preferences. Back up both the support folder and the preferences file if you migrate to a new Mac.

Where BBEdit stores this, by platform

macOS
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/

<username> is your macOS account name. Library is hidden by default. Subfolders include Setup, Language Modules, Scripts and Preview Filters. Preferences are stored separately in Library Preferences.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open the support folder quickly?

In BBEdit use the application menu to open the support or setup folders, or use Finder Go to Folder and paste the path. This avoids unhiding Library manually.

What should I copy to a new Mac?

Copy the whole BBEdit folder plus com.barebones.bbedit.plist from Library Preferences. Restart BBEdit once so it rebuilds caches and permissions.
