Where Does Game Porting Toolkit Store Prefixes?

Game Porting Toolkit install, Wine prefixes and Steam compat notes on Mac.

Last updated

Game Porting Toolkit prefixes live wherever you create them, with Apple docs defaulting to ~/my-game-prefix. The toolkit itself installs from Apple DMGs into the system.

Prefixes are disposable; installers are not. Keep the DMGs archived and treat prefixes as rebuildable.

Steam runs Windows games through a compatdata prefix of its own when launched with the toolkit environment. That prefix follows Steam rules, not Apple defaults.

Where macOS stores this, by platform

macOS
~/my-game-prefix

Default Wine prefix location from Apple sample commands; your actual prefixes sit wherever the WINEPREFIX variable pointed at creation. Toolkit files install from the Game Porting Toolkit DMGs. Steam-launched games use <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/pfx instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a Game Porting Toolkit prefix?

Yes. Prefixes above are rebuildable bottles. The game installers and DMGs are what deserve archiving.

Where are Steam games under Game Porting Toolkit?

In Steam compatdata prefixes, not ~/my-game-prefix. Each app ID gets its own pfx tree.
