Where Is Rust Player Data Stored?

Where Rust keeps local player data on PC: Steam userdata for the client and the cfg folder for config files.

Last updated

Rust stores surprisingly little on your PC. Characters and progress live on each server, so the local files are mostly Steam userdata plus config and keybinds.

The client data sits under Steam userdata ID 252490. Config files live in the cfg folder inside the game install. Copy both before a reinstall if you have custom settings.

Where Rust (game) stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[SteamID]\252490\remote

Replace the Steam path and Steam ID with your own. 252490 is Rust's Steam app ID. Server-side progress is not here, so server admins need the server machine instead.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Rust character if I reinstall?

Your characters, blueprints and inventories live on the server you play on. Reinstalling the client loses nothing except local config. Server admins back up the server-side oxide and storage folders instead.

Does Rust use Steam Cloud?

Player client data syncs through Steam (app ID 252490). Config files in the install cfg folder do not sync, so copy those manually if you have custom binds.
