Where Does OpenRCT2 Store Saves and Config?

OpenRCT2 Documents folder with save, landscape, config and plugin trees on Windows.

Last updated

OpenRCT2 keeps user data in Documents under its own folder, separate from the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 install it borrows assets from. Saves, landscapes, scenarios and config each get a subfolder.

Point the game at your RCT2 files once and the OpenRCT2 folder becomes the only backup that matters. Custom objects in the object folder travel with it.

Where OpenRCT2 stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\OpenRCT2\save

Park saves in .park.sea format, with autosaves nearby. Landscapes, scenarios, tracks and config.ini sit in sibling folders under Documents\OpenRCT2. Copy the whole OpenRCT2 folder with the game closed.

Frequently asked questions

Does OpenRCT2 use my RCT2 save folder?

No. It reads RCT2 assets from the original install but writes everything into Documents\OpenRCT2. Import old SV6 parks by opening them from the OpenRCT2 load dialog.

Where is the OpenRCT2 config file?

config.ini directly under Documents\OpenRCT2. Edit it with the game closed or use the in-game options, which write the same file.
