Where Does Final Cut Pro Store Libraries and Backups?
Final Cut Pro library, backup and Motion Templates locations on Mac, including the relink behavior when drives move.
Last updated
Final Cut Pro libraries default to the Movies folder, and the app auto-saves library backups to a Final Cut Backups folder in the same place. Effects and titles you publish land in Motion Templates.
Libraries reference media rather than always containing it. Moving drives without consolidating first is the classic route to missing-file warnings.
Where Final Cut Pro stores this, by platform
~/Movies
Check the exact location per library in File > Library Properties > Storage Locations, since any library can be moved. Backups accumulate in Final Cut Backups next to these. Motion templates live in ~/Movies/Motion Templates.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Final Cut say media is missing after I moved drives?
Open the library storage settings and consolidate media into the library, or keep external media on a drive that is always mounted at the same path. Missing-file warnings mean the alias to the media broke, not that the media was deleted.
Can I delete old Final Cut backups?
Keep the newest few backups and delete older ones. Each library backup is small relative to media, but they accumulate across every project.
