Where Does ABRT Store Crash Reports on Fedora?

ABRT keeps crash dumps in /var/spool/abrt on Red Hat systems, reported through Problem Reporting tools.

Last updated

Fedora and RHEL catch crashing programs with ABRT, which writes each incident into a spool directory with core dumps, backtraces and package versions. The desktop Problem Reporting tool reads from there.

Reports pile up fast on unstable systems and each carries a core dump. Old entries delete safely once reported or ignored. Server installs without the desktop tooling still accumulate the same spool.

Where Fedora stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/spool/abrt

One directory per crash with dump and metadata. Manage with abrt-cli list and abrt-cli rm. Retrace server uploads from here need no local debug symbols.

Frequently asked questions

can i delete files in var spool abrt

Yes, once crashes are reported or dismissed. Use abrt-cli rm to remove them cleanly. The daemon recreates entries for future crashes automatically.

how do i report a fedora crash

Open Problem Reporting, review the ABRT entry, and submit to Bugzilla or the retrace server. The spool directory already holds every file the report needs.
