Where Does Amethyst Store Data on Android?

Amethyst private storage on Android is not browsable, so identity moves by key, not files.

Last updated

Amethyst keeps its event cache and settings in app private storage (/data/data/com.vitorpamplona.amethyst), invisible to file managers without root, while the private key itself sits in the Android KeyStore, never as a copyable file.

Identity moves by key material: export nsec (or QR/mnemonic where supported), import on the new device, and relays resupply profile, follows, posts and DMs. Local cache, drafts and settings stay behind and resync. An nsec grants full account control, so password manager or paper beats screenshots; Amber external signer keeps the key in one dedicated app instead.

Where Amethyst stores this, by platform

Private event database, media cache and settings (not browsable without root). Keys in Android KeyStore, not files. Move identity via nsec/QR/mnemonic export and import; relays restore content.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Amethyst to a new phone?

Export your nsec private key (or QR/mnemonic) from account settings, import on the new install, and let relays resync profile, follows and messages. Local drafts and cache do not transfer.

Is my Amethyst nsec safe in screenshots?

No safer than a password photo. Anyone with the nsec posts, zaps and messages as you with no recovery, so store it in a password manager or on paper.
