Where Are AoE2 Definitive Edition Saves Stored?
AoE2 DE keeps saves, replays, mods, and hotkeys in a Games folder in your profile, with an in game button to open it.
Last updated
Forgotten Empires skips Documents for a Games folder directly in the user profile. Saves, recorded games, subscribed mods, local mods, and hotkey profiles each get their own subfolder under the Steam ID directory.
The load screen carries an Open Saved Games Folder button, which official support recommends over memorizing paths. Compatibility breaks cleanly at version lines: nothing from HD or classic imports, and the game says so rather than corrupting.
Where Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\[your Steam ID]\savegame
Saves are .aoe2spgame, replays .aoe2record. Use the in game Open Saved Games Folder button instead of memorizing the Steam ID folder.
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/813780/pfx/
Steam Play prefix for app 813780 with the same tree inside. Mods and hotkeys follow the same relative layout.
Frequently asked questions
Do old HD Edition saves work?
They do not convert. HD Edition and classic saves use older formats the Definitive engine rejects. Recorded games from those versions likewise refuse to play. Recreate or download native versions instead.
Where is Return of Rome content?
Return of Rome content lives under a modes Pompeii folder with its own savegame and resources trees. The main folder ignores those files, so back up both trees for complete coverage.
