Where Does Apex Legends Store Its Config?
Apex Legends keeps settings.cfg, videoconfig.txt and profile.cfg in Saved Games on Windows, and inside the Proton prefix on Linux.
Last updated
Apex Legends writes its config to the Windows Saved Games profile folder, not to AppData and not to the install folder. The path is identical for Steam and EA App installs, which is why one set of instructions works for both.
Three files do the work: settings.cfg for keybinds, videoconfig.txt for graphics, and profile.cfg in the sibling profile folder for HUD, sound and controller options. Copy the folder somewhere safe before you edit anything, because the game rewrites these files as you play.
Launch options belong in Steam or the EA App. An autoexec.cfg goes in the game's own cfg folder and is called from there with +exec autoexec.
Where Apex Legends stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Respawn\Apex\local
settings.cfg and videoconfig.txt sit here, with previousgamestate.txt; profile.cfg is in the sibling folder at %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Respawn\Apex\profile. Paste %userprofile%\Saved Games\Respawn\Apex\local into the Run box. EA support confirms the folder is the same for EA App and Steam, and it has nothing to do with %localappdata%. Keep a backup: Respawn publishes no list of which config edits are acceptable.
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1172470/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Respawn/Apex/local
Apex runs through Proton, so the Windows folder appears inside the prefix for app ID 1172470. The Steam root varies between ~/.steam/steam and the Flatpak location ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam while the tail stays the same. Config file projects that publish this path give it in the same form.
Frequently asked questions
where is apex legends settings.cfg
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Respawn\Apex\local\settings.cfg, and it holds your keybinds. videoconfig.txt next to it holds the graphics settings, and profile.cfg sits one level up in the profile folder. The location is the same whether you play through Steam or the EA App.
where does apex legends store video settings
videoconfig.txt, in %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Respawn\Apex\local. Editing it outside the game exposes values the menus do not offer, and the file gets overwritten if it is writable, so clear the read-only attribute when you want the game to save changes again.
can you get banned for editing apex config
EA publishes no list of acceptable edits. Guidance on EA's forums says general performance tweaks should be fine while anything giving an edge, like removing obscuring effects, is not, and EA's terms ban undocumented features and cheats. Back the folder up and stay near menu-level settings.
