Where Are Apple Watch Backups Stored?

Apple Watch backs up automatically to its paired iPhone, and that data rides along inside the iPhone backup on your computer: MobileSync Backup on Mac and Windows.

Last updated

There is no watch backup file you can point at. Apple Watch backs itself up to the paired iPhone continuously, with a guaranteed fresh backup every time you unpair. The watch data then travels inside the iPhone backup, either to iCloud or to your computer.

Computer backups hold it under the standard MobileSync Backup folder alongside everything else from the phone. iCloud backups include it too, but Apple gives no file view there. The practical check happens on the iPhone itself under iPhone Storage, where the Watch entry lists stored backups.

Where Apple Watch stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

Each subfolder is one device backup including its watch data. Use Finder Manage Backups or Go to Folder to browse. Restore the iPhone from here and the watch backup comes with it.

Windows
%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Same role as on Mac for PCs using the Apple Devices app. Manage backups from the app General tab with options to archive, delete, or reveal in Explorer. iCloud only backups never appear here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move my Apple Watch to a new iPhone?

Unpairing forces a fresh backup to the iPhone first, and it takes longer than expected for exactly that reason. On the new iPhone choose Restore from Backup during watch setup and pick the latest entry. Do the unpair before wiping the old phone.

How do I check an Apple Watch backup exists?

On the paired iPhone open Settings, General, iPhone Storage, then find Watch in the list. Documents and Data shows available watch backups with dates. This is the only on phone confirmation that a backup exists.
