Where Does ART Store Config and Edit Sidecars?

ART keeps its config in ~/.config/ART on Linux (%LOCALAPPDATA%\ART on Windows), with per photo edits in .arp sidecar files beside each image.

Last updated

ART splits storage between a config home and your photo folders. Settings, scripts, and custom format handlers live in the config folder. Actual edits live in .arp sidecars sitting next to each raw file, so edits travel with photos when folders move together.

That split decides backup strategy. Back up the config folder for your setup and the photo trees for your work. Deleting a sidecar reverts its photo to unedited without touching pixels, which doubles as a quick reset trick.

Where ART stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/ART

Settings, ctlscripts, and imageio handlers. Sidecar .arp files stay with photos, not here. Copy this folder to migrate preferences between machines.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ART

Same role as the Linux config home for settings and scripts. Photo edits still live as .arp sidecars beside images. Check the docs path if a custom location was set.

Frequently asked questions

Where did my ART edits go?

Look next to the raw file for a matching .arp sidecar with the photo name plus .arp appended. Snapshots and history live inside it. Copying the photo without its sidecar moves an unedited image, which explains most lost edit mysteries.

How do I install CTL scripts in ART?

Place .ctl files in the ctlscripts subfolder of the ART config directory and restart. The official docs give ~/.config/ART/ctlscripts on Linux and the matching LocalAppData path on Windows. They then appear as modes in Color Tone Correction.
