Where Does Augment Code Store Settings and Rules?

Augment keeps CLI settings in a .augment folder in your home directory, with per-project overrides and VS Code chat cache beside it.

Last updated

Augment splits its state across two places. The CLI owns a .augment folder in your home directory with a clear hierarchy: user settings, project settings, personal overrides, system defaults and a rules folder. Learn that tree once and every platform makes sense.

The VS Code extension adds a second layer under the editor's own storage. Chat history per workspace sits under a hashed workspaceStorage folder, with a global copy in globalStorage. When chat breaks, that workspace cache is the part to remove. Leave the .augment folder alone in that case.

Where Augment Code stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<user>\.augment\settings.json

CLI user settings for the current account. Project files at <project>/.augment/settings.json override these, with settings.local.json for personal project tweaks. Rules live in ~/.augment/rules and user-guidelines.md alongside.

macOS
~/.augment/settings.json

Same CLI hierarchy as Windows: user file, project shared file, personal local file, plus system defaults at /etc/augment/settings.json. Extension chat cache sits separately under Code User workspaceStorage per workspace hash.

Linux
~/.augment/settings.json

Same CLI hierarchy with system defaults at /etc/augment/settings.json. Extension installs land under ~/.vscode/extensions/augment.vscode-augment-<version>/. Exported daily logs named augment.log appear in the workspace root.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Augment CLI settings file?

Edit ~/.augment/settings.json for yourself, or <project>/.augment/settings.json for settings the team shares. Personal project overrides go in settings.local.json next to it. System defaults sit in ProgramData on Windows and /etc on Mac and Linux.

Augment chat is corrupted. What do I delete?

Delete the Augment.vscode-augment folder under the matching workspaceStorage hash. That cache holds chat history for one workspace folder, and removing it is the documented fix for corrupted chats. Your .augment settings and rules survive since they live elsewhere.

Where do Augment custom rules live?

Put shared rules in <project>/.augment/rules and personal ones in ~/.augment/rules, with longer guidance in ~/.augment/user-guidelines.md. The CLI picks up both layers. Extension installs live separately under ~/.vscode/extensions/augment.vscode-augment-<version>/.
