Where Does Bash-it Store Data?

Bash-it lives in ~/.bash_it with themes and plugins beside the loader. Reload the shell after restoring files.

Last updated

Bash-it installs as a folder in the home directory with themes, plugins and aliases inside. The shell loader sources it from bashrc. Nothing scatters elsewhere by default.

Back up the whole folder to move the setup. Custom pieces live beside stock ones, so keep both. Exact layout stays stable across releases.

Where Bash-it stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.bash_it (themes, plugins and aliases)

Themes, plugins and aliases in one home folder. Sourced from bashrc. Copy the whole tree for moves.

macOS
~/.bash_it (themes, plugins and aliases)

Same home folder layout on Mac. Reload the shell after restoring.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Bash-it to a new machine?

Copy the whole bash_it folder to matching home paths on the new machine. Themes, plugins and aliases travel together. Reload the shell after restoring.

Theme broke after moving. Why?

Check the enabled list inside the config first. Missing pieces usually mean a plugin path changed. Re-enable them from the template.
