Where Does BetterDisplay Store Settings on Mac?

BetterDisplay support folder and preferences plist paths on macOS.

Last updated

BetterDisplay keeps licensing and working data in Application Support and preferences in a standard plist. The two move together during migration.

Older installs used the BetterDummy name and a different defaults domain. Upgraded machines can hold leftovers under both names. Check for both before assuming a reset worked.

Where BetterDisplay stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/BetterDisplay

Licensing and working data folder. Main settings live in ~/Library/Preferences/pro.betterdisplay.BetterDisplay.plist (version 1 used me.waydabber.BetterDummy). Reset with defaults delete plus removing this folder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate BetterDisplay to a new Mac?

Run defaults export pro.betterdisplay.BetterDisplay ~/Desktop/betterdisplay.plist to save settings. Import with defaults import on the new machine, then launch the app once to confirm displays and presets load.

How do I fully reset BetterDisplay?

Quit the app, run defaults delete pro.betterdisplay.BetterDisplay, and remove the Application Support folder. Old version 1 installs used the me.waydabber.BetterDummy domain, so clear that one too on upgraded machines.
