Where Does BGB Store Saves and Settings?
BGB keeps bgb.ini beside its exe and writes .sav files next to each ROM by default, with an optional central save folder.
Last updated
BGB stores settings and saves in the two most obvious places: an ini beside the executable and save files beside the ROMs. The bgb.ini file appears after the first launch and carries every option. Each game's .sav shares its ROM's name in the ROM's folder unless redirected.
That simplicity makes BGB installs trivially portable: the folder is the whole emulator. The save format setting is the one detail that bites, since compressed saves only suit BGB itself. Keep it raw when saves might travel.
Where BGB stores this, by platform
[BGB-Folder]\bgb.ini
Every emulator option in plain text, created on first run. The -ini flag loads an alternate file for multi-instance setups; -nowriteini freezes it for automation.
[Rom-Folder]\[Game].sav
Raw battery images named after their ROMs. RTC games append 48 bytes in VBA-compatible form; toggle that off when other emulators refuse the file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move a BGB save to another emulator?
Set SAV/SNA File Format to Uncompressed or Raw in the ini. Compressed saves carry a BGB header other emulators reject; raw battery images transfer cleanly to VBA, flashcarts, and beyond.
Can all saves go in one folder?
Set the save-files folder in Options under the misc tab. With it empty, saves land beside their ROMs. Either way the .sav name always matches its ROM.
