Where Are Caesar 3 Save Files Located?

Caesar 3 keeps .sav files in the install C3 folder, with VirtualStore shadows on newer Windows builds.

Last updated

Caesar 3 stores saves as .sav files in the C3 folder inside the install directory, on Steam and GOG alike. There is no cloud and no Documents involved; the 1998 layout writes where the game lives.

Modern Windows ghosts the writes. Program Files installs redirect into the VirtualStore shadow, splitting saves between two trees by elevation. Check both trees before assuming saves are lost forever. Julius and Augustus read the same files in place, so one folder serves the original and both remakes. Copy the C3 folder whole.

Where Caesar III stores this, by platform

Windows
<install>\Caesar 3\C3

.sav files in the install C3 tree. VirtualStore shadows split saves by elevation; check both. Julius and Augustus share the format. No cloud; copy the folder.

Frequently asked questions

My Caesar 3 saves are not in the install folder. Where are they?

Check the VirtualStore shadow first. Admin-run or Program Files installs redirect writes to AppData Local VirtualStore, so two save sets can exist. Copy both, then standardize on one install outside Program Files.

Do Julius and Augustus share saves with Caesar 3?

Yes, fully. Julius and Augustus read stock .sav files unchanged, and Augustus saves load back in Julius but not vice versa. Keep one vanilla backup before modding the tree.
