Where Does Chocolatey Install Packages?
Where Chocolatey installs packages under ProgramData, and which sibling folders hold config, cache and logs.
Last updated
Chocolatey installs everything under C:\ProgramData\chocolatey. Each package gets a versioned folder inside lib, while the root holds the binaries, the chocolatey.config file and the logs. One parent path covers the whole manager.
ProgramData is hidden by default, so paste the path into Explorer instead of clicking for it. Package installs need an elevated shell, but browsing the lib folder to inspect versions needs no admin rights at all.
Where Chocolatey stores this, by platform
C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\lib
Per package folders live in lib, install logs in logs, and chocolatey.config at the root holds settings like cacheLocation. Uninstalling a package removes its lib folder but leaves cached installers until you clean them.
Frequently asked questions
Where did Chocolatey install a specific package?
Look in C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\lib\<package-name>. The tools or content folder inside holds the actual payload. Portable packages keep everything there; shimmed executables land in the bin folder at the Chocolatey root.
How do I move the Chocolatey download cache off C:?
Run choco config set --name cacheLocation --value <path>. Future downloads use the new cache. The setting lives in chocolatey.config next to the lib folder, so scripted machines can set it before the first install.
