Where Does Chrysalis Keep Layouts?

Chrysalis keeps the live layout on Kaleidoscope keyboards, with JSON backups wherever you export them. The split explained.

Last updated

Chrysalis edits the layout stored in the keyboard firmware. Connecting reads the board into the app. Closing without exporting leaves nothing new on disk.

Backups are explicit JSON exports you place yourself, usually in Documents. That surprises people hunting config folders. No export means the only copy rides inside the keyboard.

Where Chrysalis stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Chrysalis\

User chosen export folder for layout snapshots. The live layout stays in keyboard firmware and is read at connect. Name files per board and date.

macOS
~/Documents/Chrysalis/

Same export model on Mac. An empty folder means no backup was ever made, not missing data. Export before firmware updates as a habit.

Linux
~/Documents/Chrysalis/

Identical handling on Linux. Board access depends on udev permissions, so connect failures point to rules rather than paths.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my Chrysalis backups?

Use the backup or export control and save to Documents with the board name and date. Each file is one snapshot. Without an export there is nothing on disk to find, since the board holds the layout.

How do I restore a Chrysalis layout?

Import the saved file and flash it to the board. The keyboard then carries that layout across machines with no software running. Keep separate files per board model.
