Where Does Commit Store Templates on Linux?

Where GNOME Commit keeps repos, commit templates and settings on Linux for backup and moves.

Last updated

Commit splits Linux state two ways: repositories wherever you cloned them, and templates with settings in its data folder. Credentials live in the system keyring apart from both stores.

Copy the data folder with Commit closed for migration; repos move as plain folders with remotes intact. Repos never depend on the app data to open elsewhere. Templates travel as files inside the folder on every install.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Commit to a new install?

Keep repos where they are and copy the app data folder with Commit closed. Templates and settings travel with the folder. Remotes need no moving; they live in each repo already.

Where are Commit message templates?

Open Commit preferences and read the template entries. Commit message templates save as files in the data folder. The entries always show the live paths after changes.
