Where Does Conduit Store Data and Config?

Conduit Matrix server database folder and TOML config paths for systemd and Docker installs on Linux.

Last updated

Conduit is a small Matrix homeserver with two locations that matter. The database directory defaults to /var/lib/matrix-conduit and holds conduit.db with rooms, users, and media metadata. That folder is the bulk of disk usage on busy servers.

Config is a single TOML file. Package installs read /etc/matrix-conduit/conduit.toml. Other methods pass --config with an explicit path or fall back to the working directory. Media blobs referenced by the database sit inside the data folder, so back up both together.

Where Conduit stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/lib/matrix-conduit

Holds conduit.db and cached media. Owned by the conduit user on package installs. Docker users map a volume here to keep rooms across container updates.

Linux
/etc/matrix-conduit/conduit.toml

Server name, ports, and database path live here. Check the systemd unit when the file seems missing, since the --config flag overrides the default.

Frequently asked questions

where is my Conduit config file

Check the systemd unit with systemctl cat conduit and look for --config. Package installs use /etc/matrix-conduit/conduit.toml. Docker and binary runs often keep conduit.toml in the working directory instead.

how do i migrate Conduit to a new server

Stop the service, copy /var/lib/matrix-conduit, and save conduit.toml. The database file inside holds rooms and accounts. Restore both to the same paths on the new host.
