Where Does CUPS Store Printer Config?
Where CUPS keeps printers.conf, cupsd.conf, and job queues on Linux print servers.
Last updated
CUPS configuration lives in /etc/cups: cupsd.conf for the daemon, printers.conf for queues, plus classes, policies, and subscriptions. The scheduler rewrites some files at runtime, so edit with care.
Spool and cache stay outside etc. Jobs queue under /var/spool/cups while PPDs and drivers resolve from system paths. Copying /etc/cups between machines moves queues cleanly when driver packages match.
Where CUPS stores this, by platform
/etc/cups/
cupsd.conf, printers.conf, classes.conf, ppd/. Edit via localhost:631 or lpadmin; stop cupsd before hand edits. Jobs spool under /var/spool/cups.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up printer definitions?
Edit /etc/cups/printers.conf with cups stopped (or prefer the web UI at localhost:631 and lpadmin). Hand edits while cupsd runs get overwritten. Back up the whole /etc/cups dir to preserve classes and policies too.
Where are stuck print jobs?
Spool files live under /var/spool/cups with control data in /var/cache/cups. Stuck jobs clear with cancel -a or lpadmin. Logs at /var/log/cups/error_log show why a queue stalled.
