Where Is the Windows Default User Profile?

Windows builds every new profile from C:\Users\Default, a hidden template most admins customize for deployments.

Last updated

Every new Windows account starts as a copy of C:\Users\Default. Shortcuts, registry hive and AppData placed there appear in each fresh profile automatically.

That makes it the lever for fleet defaults and the trap for broken logins. A corrupt template breaks every new account while old ones work fine. Edit it with the account unloaded and always keep a pristine copy.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\Default

Hidden template copied per new profile, with NTUSER.DAT as its registry hive. Customize with CopyProfile during sysprep, not by hand editing a live system.

Frequently asked questions

how do i set default files for new windows users

Place them in C:\Users\Default, ideally through CopyProfile in an answer file. Every account created afterward inherits the files and settings.

new windows accounts fail to sign in but old ones work

The Default profile template is likely corrupt. Restore C:\Users\Default from a healthy machine or installation media and retry the new account.
