Where Does Déjà Dup Keep Settings and Backups?

Déjà Dup settings live in dconf with duplicity doing the work. The keys, cache, and destination story.

Last updated

Déjà Dup is a frontend; duplicity moves the bytes. App settings live in dconf under org.gnome.DejaDup, physically inside ~/.config/dconf/user. Flatpak builds instead use a keyfile under ~/.var/app/org.gnome.DejaDup. List keys with gsettings list-recursively when the GUI hides an option.

Backups themselves go wherever Storage Location points: external drive, network share, or cloud folder of duplicity volumes. The duplicity working cache sits in ~/.cache/duplicity. Reset cleanly with dconf reset -f /org/gnome/deja-dup/ rather than reinstalling the package.

Where Déjà Dup stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/dconf/user

Binary dconf db holding org.gnome.DejaDup keys. Use gsettings or dconf-editor, never raw copies. Flatpak twin at ~/.var/app/org.gnome.DejaDup/config. Duplicity cache in ~/.cache/duplicity.

Frequently asked questions

how do i reset deja dup completely

Run dconf reset -f /org/gnome/deja-dup/ without removing the package. That clears schedules, includes, and destination. Old backup volumes on the destination stay until deleted there.

where are my deja dup backup files

At the Storage Location you picked in the main window, as duplicity volumes. The app only records the destination in dconf; the data never passes through a local staging folder worth hunting.
