Derail Valley stores careers in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Altfuture\Derail Valley\Users, one numbered folder per player holding Career, Freeroam and ImportSave trees. Individual runs keep timestamped .save files in their Saves subfolders. Steam Cloud syncs the tree under app ID 588030.
The location moved mid-life from the install folder, so half the internet still quotes the dead path. The in-game save manager opens the live folder directly through a folder icon, which beats every guide. Copy the Users tree with the game closed; the files are small.
