Where Does DokuWiki Store Pages and Config?

DokuWiki page, media, and config paths on Debian and Ubuntu, plus the generic data folder for manual installs.

Last updated

DokuWiki stores everything in flat files, no database involved. A manual install keeps it all under a data/ folder next to the PHP files. Pages sit in data/pages, uploads in data/media, and old revisions in data/attic.

Debian and Ubuntu split this layout across the filesystem. Config moves to /etc/dokuwiki and the data tree moves to /var/lib/dokuwiki, with symlinks pointing back. Back up both locations before upgrades. The config holds ACLs and local settings, the data tree holds the actual wiki content.

Where DokuWiki stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/lib/dokuwiki/data

Debian package layout. Config symlinked from /usr/share/dokuwiki/conf. Pages are under data/pages, media under data/media. Copy this whole tree to migrate content.

Linux
/etc/dokuwiki

Holds local.php, acl.auth.php, and plugin settings on Debian and Ubuntu. Keep this with your data backups. Manual installs instead keep conf/ inside the web root.

Frequently asked questions

how do i migrate DokuWiki to a new server

Copy /var/lib/dokuwiki/data to the new server and restore /etc/dokuwiki for settings. Reinstall plugins separately, since they live outside the data folder on Debian packages.

where are DokuWiki page revisions stored

Pages are in data/pages, uploads in data/media, and revisions in data/attic. The data/meta folder holds search metadata that DokuWiki rebuilds on its own if deleted.
