Where Does Dota 2 Store Config and Hero Builds?

Dota 2 config, keybinds and custom hero builds on PC, and which folder Steam Cloud actually syncs.

Last updated

Dota 2 keeps synced settings under <Steam>\userdata\[Steam-ID]\570\remote: keybinds, hero grids and the itembuilds folder with your custom item builds. Match history and MMR live on Valve servers and never touch your disk.

Launch options and autoexec live apart in the install tree (<Steam>\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg). Old guides pointing at dota\cfg without the game\ middle are pre Reborn and stale. Back up the 570 folder with Steam closed, and answer Upload if Cloud asks, or the server copy wins.

Where Dota 2 stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[Steam-ID]\570\remote

[Steam-ID] is your numeric Steam account ID (AppID 570). Holds itembuilds, hero grid config and keybinds. Launch options in <install>\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg\autoexec.cfg. Progress is server side.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/userdata/[Steam-ID]/570

Same 570 remote layout under the Linux Steam root. Native build exists; install tree at ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/dota 2 beta for autoexec.cfg.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/[Steam-ID]/570

Same 570 remote layout under the macOS Steam root. Native build exists; same split between synced remote folder and install cfg.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my custom Dota 2 item builds stored?

In the itembuilds subfolder of userdata\[Steam-ID]\570\remote, alongside hero grid configs. Copy that whole 570 folder to migrate builds; Steam Cloud syncs it, so answer Upload on conflict to keep local versions.

Will reinstalling Dota 2 delete my settings?

No, as long as Steam Cloud is on: the 570 remote folder restores on login. Your autoexec.cfg in the install tree is the exception; back that file up separately since reinstalls wipe the game folder.
