Where Does DuckDuckGo Browser Store Data?

DuckDuckGo sandboxes data in a Store package on Windows and a container on Mac. The exact paths.

Last updated

DuckDuckGo ships as a sandboxed app on both desktops, so its data hides deeper than Chromium cousins. On Windows it is a Store package under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\DuckDuckGo.DesktopBrowser_*\LocalState, with browser-v1.db holding profile data and an EBWebView tree for web content.

On macOS it lives in ~/Library/Containers/com.duckduckgo.macos.browser/Data/Library/Database.sqlite, encrypted at rest, which is why outside tools cannot usefully read bookmarks. No Linux build exists. Back up the whole package or container folder rather than single files; the layout expects its siblings.

Where DuckDuckGo stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\DuckDuckGo.DesktopBrowser_ya2fgkz3nks94\LocalState

browser-v1.db plus favicons and EBWebView inside. The hash suffix varies by install, so glob DuckDuckGo* under Packages. Copy with the browser closed.

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.duckduckgo.macos.browser

Database.sqlite under Data/Library, encrypted. Expect permission prompts; grant Full Disk Access for terminal tools. Direct download and App Store builds share this container style.

Frequently asked questions

can i import bookmarks out of duckduckgo desktop

Use the in-app export; the macOS store is encrypted and the Windows tree is an opaque WebView layout. File level copies back up fine but do not parse into other browsers.

how do i back up duckduckgo browser

Copy the LocalState folder (Windows) or the whole container (Mac) with the browser closed. Restore to the identical path. Mismatched siblings cause first launch resets.
