Where Is the dvtm Config File?

dvtm has no runtime config: keys, layouts and colors compile in from config.h, with a few flags like -m and -h.

Last updated

dvtm follows suckless law: configuration is C source. Copy config.def.h to config.h, set keys, layouts, colors and status handling, then make. The binary carries your setup; no dotfile is ever consulted.

A handful of runtime flags (-m modifier, -h scrollback, -s/-c fifos, -t title) cover per-run variance. Everything else is a recompile, which keeps the runtime dependency-free and the config versioned like code.

Where dvtm stores this, by platform

macOS
[SourceDir]/config.h

Keys, layouts, colors, status. Runtime flags cover modifier, scrollback and fifos; DVTM_* env vars expose window ids to children.

Linux
[SourceDir]/config.h

Same compile-time model. Copy mode pipes scrollback through $DVTM_EDITOR (else $VISUAL/$EDITOR/vi); register pastes with Mod-p.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change dvtm keybindings?

Edit config.h (starting from config.def.h) and recompile. The default Mod is Ctrl-g; change it there or per run with -m. No reload exists by design.

How do scripts feed the dvtm status bar?

Pass -s for the status fifo and -c for the command fifo (commands must be defined in config.h). dvtm-status scripts read the former to paint external info.
