Where Is the emptty Config File?

emptty reads system defaults from /etc/emptty/conf plus an optional user session file, logging to /var/log/emptty.

Last updated

emptty keeps machine policy in /etc/emptty/conf: which TTY, autologin user and session, MOTD files, colors, log path. Restart the instance after edits; nothing reloads live.

Per-user sessions are separate small files (~/.config/emptty beats ~/.emptty) naming one session to start. Custom .desktop entries slot into /etc/emptty/custom-sessions system-wide or the matching user folder.

Where emptty stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/emptty/conf

TTY, autologin, MOTD, logging. Logs default to /var/log/emptty/[TTY].log (includes Xorg/WM output). -c overrides the path; --print-config dumps the merge.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enable autologin with emptty?

Set DEFAULT_USER plus AUTOLOGIN=true (and optionally DEFAULT_SESSION) in /etc/emptty/conf, then restart emptty. The user needs nopasswdlogin membership for it to stick.

emptty shows a chooser instead of starting my WM. What is missing?

Create ~/.config/emptty (or ~/.emptty) with Name and Exec lines. Without one, emptty just lists installed desktops instead of starting anything.
