Where Does Everything Search Store Settings and Its Database?

Everything keeps its ini and search database in %APPDATA% when installed, or beside the exe in portable mode.

Last updated

Everything stores its settings and index database in %APPDATA%\Everything when installed with the service, which covers Everything.ini and the Everything.db index. That split explains a classic confusion: reinstalling without wiping AppData keeps old settings, while deleting it resets everything including filters.

Portable mode behaves differently. Run from a folder without installing and Everything keeps Everything.ini beside the exe instead. The official FAQ documents a toggle for this: enabling Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything pins the installed behavior regardless of launch location.

Where Everything stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Everything

Everything.ini plus the Everything.db index live here for installed builds. Enable Store settings and data in %APPDATA%/Everything under Tools > Options > General to pin this behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Everything forget my settings after reinstalling?

The installer defaults may differ from your old setup. Check that Store settings and data in %APPDATA%/Everything is enabled, otherwise settings follow the exe location instead.

Can I move the Everything database to another drive?

Yes for portable mode by moving the whole folder. Installed builds expect %APPDATA%/Everything, so relocate with a junction or switch to portable to keep paths simple.
