Where Does Fabio Store Config?
Fabio reads fabio.properties in etc fabio on startup. Registry data stays in Consul, not on local disk.
Last updated
Fabio is a Consul aware load balancer. Local config lives in fabio.properties, usually under /etc/fabio. That file sets proxy ports, UI, metrics, and registry options.
Routes themselves live in Consul KV or tags, not in local files. Logs go to stdout or syslog. To move a Fabio node, copy the properties file. The registry rebuilds from Consul. Keep Consul addresses with the properties backup, since Fabio rebuilds its route table from the registry on boot. Confirm the UI route table after restart, since stale Consul entries send traffic to dead back ends.
Where Fabio stores this, by platform
/etc/fabio/fabio.properties
Proxy ports and registry settings. Copy on migration. Restart fabio after edits and check the UI route table.
/etc/systemd/system/fabio.service
Startup flags with config path. Check here for custom locations. Reload systemd after edits.
Frequently asked questions
where is the fabio config file
Packages default to /etc/fabio/fabio.properties. Check the systemd unit for a custom -cfg flag. Test route changes with a canary backend first. Keep the same path on new hosts to avoid unit edits.
does fabio store routes on disk
No. Back ends and routes come from Consul or manual overrides. The properties file holds proxy, UI, and metrics settings. Back up that file plus Consul data.
