Where Is the Fastfetch Config File?

Fastfetch reads ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc on Linux. Generate it with --gen-config, presets live beside it.

Last updated

Fastfetch ships without a config file. It runs fine with built-in defaults until you generate one, which catches people who go looking for a file that was never created. The command fastfetch --gen-config writes it for you.

The file uses JSONC, meaning plain JSON plus comments. Keep your edits there rather than passing long flag lists each run. Presets are separate small files you reference by name, and they resolve from three search paths in order.

Where Fastfetch stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc

Created only by fastfetch --gen-config. Holds modules, logo, and display settings in JSONC format.

Linux
~/.local/share/fastfetch/presets

Preset search path in order: working directory, then this user folder, then /usr/share/fastfetch/presets for distro-shipped ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a Fastfetch config file?

Run fastfetch --gen-config. It writes a commented default file to ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc. Edit that file afterwards, since flags alone do not persist.

Where do Fastfetch presets live?

Pass -c with a name or path, such as fastfetch -c neofetch. Presets resolve from the working directory, then ~/.local/share/fastfetch/presets, then /usr/share/fastfetch/presets.
