Where Does File History Store Backups?

File History versions Libraries and Desktop onto external drives, with its catalog and config on the backup target.

Last updated

File History copies Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites to an external drive or network share on a schedule. Each backed up file keeps timestamped versions you browse with Restore personal files. The catalog database lives on the backup target beside the data, not on C drive.

Configuration (which folders, how often, how long versions persist) sits in local service state plus the target drive config. Pointing File History at a new drive starts a fresh version chain; old chains stay browsable on the previous disk until cleaned.

Catalog database (catalog.edb family) beside versioned files on the target. Add folders via Backup options; exclusions live in the same settings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I restore an older version of a file?

Open Restore personal files from Settings, browse the timeline, select the version, and restore in place or aside. The catalog on the backup drive powers that timeline.

Can I move File History to a new drive?

Stop the old backup, select the new drive in Backup options, and let a fresh chain build. Keep the old drive until its versions age out of usefulness.
