Where Does Freeciv Store Savegames?

Where Freeciv keeps savegames, scenarios, and client options on each desktop OS.

Last updated

Freeciv keeps a dotfolder per OS root with saves/, scenarios/, and client option files inside. Linux uses ~/.freeciv, Windows its AppData-adjacent profile path, macOS its Library path.

Qt, Gtk, and SDL clients share the same tree, so switching frontends keeps campaigns intact. Long-running multiplayer games autosave beside manual saves; both copy the same way.

Where Freeciv stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\.freeciv\saves

Savegames in saves/ plus scenarios/ and client rc files nearby. Qt, Gtk, and SDL clients share this tree.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/freeciv/saves

Same saves plus options layout. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden.

Linux
~/.freeciv/saves

Classic dotfolder layout (saves/, scenarios/, .freeciv-client-rc). Exact rc filename varies slightly by client build.

Frequently asked questions

How do I transfer Freeciv saves?

Copy the saves folder to the matching path on the new machine. Keep client and server versions matched; old saves load best in the release that wrote them. Scenarios travel in the sibling scenarios folder.

Where are client options versus saves?

Client options live in .freeciv-client-rc (or freeciv-client-rc) in the home-adjacent root, separate from saves. Back up both trees for a full move; options alone restore keybindings without a single turn.
