Where Does FS-UAE Store Configs and Saves?
FS-UAE keeps everything under its base directory (Documents/FS-UAE by default): Configurations, Save States, Kickstarts, and Floppies.
Last updated
FS-UAE funnels every file through one base directory, which makes backup a single-folder affair. Configurations holds machine setups, Save States holds snapshots, Kickstarts holds ROMs, and Floppies holds disk images. Logs and controller profiles sit beside them.
The default base is Documents/FS-UAE with a home-folder fallback on Linux. A tiny base-dir override file (or the --base-dir flag, or portable mode) relocates the lot. Path variables like $BASE keep configs portable when the base moves.
Where FS-UAE stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\FS-UAE
Configurations, Save States, Kickstarts, Floppies, Logs, and more under one roof. Override with the base-dir file, --base-dir, or portable mode. Beware Notepad saving base-dir with a hidden .txt extension.
~/Documents/FS-UAE
Same base layout on macOS. The override file lives at ~/Library/Preferences/fs-uae/base-dir for Mac users who want the tree elsewhere.
~/Documents/FS-UAE
Same tree, with $HOME/FS-UAE as fallback when Documents is not XDG-configured. The override file is ~/.config/fs-uae/base-dir, and fs-uae.conf there can set base_dir too.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move the whole FS-UAE folder?
Write the desired path into the base-dir override file for your OS (a plain text file with just the path). Both FS-UAE and the Launcher honor it, and portable builds use their own folder automatically.
Where are my machine configurations?
Open the Configurations folder in the base directory; the Launcher lists every .fs-uae file there. The Default.fs-uae file boots when no other config is given.
