Where Does Funkwhale Store Music and Data?
Self-hosted Funkwhale keeps music and media under /srv/funkwhale/data on Docker installs, with the database in Postgres.
Last updated
Funkwhale stores two very different things in two places. Audio files and generated media sit on disk under /srv/funkwhale/data. Everything describing them (libraries, playlists, federated follows) lives in Postgres. One without the other is a hollow restore.
Exact host paths depend on your compose file, since these are bind mounts. The container-side layout is stable across versions, so check the volumes section if your host folder differs. Library imports scan the music subfolder on demand.
Where Funkwhale stores this, by platform
/srv/funkwhale/data
Host-side default from the official compose setup. Contains music, media, and static subfolders. Mount your own disk here for larger collections.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Funkwhale?
Back up /srv/funkwhale/data for files plus a Postgres dump for metadata. Files alone restore the audio but lose playlists, favorites, and follows.
Can Funkwhale use my existing music folder?
Yes. Point the music volume at your existing collection or copy albums into /srv/funkwhale/data/music, then run the import. Funkwhale never edits the audio files, it only indexes them.
