Where Does the GCam App Store Data?

Google Camera keeps configs in private storage on Pixel phones. Settings and XML cache stay local and Open Camera stays separate.

Last updated

Google Camera ships on Pixel phones under the classic GoogleCamera package. Private storage holds settings and XML config cache. No iOS build exists. Settings sit beside cached config data in the same private area. Stored settings persist with the cached configs.

Configs live as XML files beside the private dir on shared storage where accessible. Open Camera is a different app with separate data. The separate app uses its own private area. Fresh installs reload defaults until configs import. Defaults apply until that import step runs. Manual copy restores the prior setup.

Private settings and config cache for the verified Pixel package. XML configs copy by hand; Open Camera is separate.

Frequently asked questions

Is GCam the same as Open Camera?

Install GCam at com.google.android.GoogleCamera for Pixel cameras. Open Camera is a separate app with its own data post on this site. Same phone can run both.

How do I back up GCam configs?

Back up XML configs from shared storage before switching phones. Configs live as files, so they copy by hand. Reimport them in settings on the new install.
