Where Does GNOME Keyring Store Passwords?
Where GNOME Keyring keeps encrypted keyrings on Linux, modern paths plus the legacy folder.
Last updated
GNOME Keyring encrypts app passwords, Wi Fi secrets and tokens in keyring files under your home directory. The Login keyring unlocks at sign in when passwords match. A memory only session keyring never touches disk.
Modern systems use ~/.local/share/keyrings with .keyring files. Very old installs used ~/.gnome2/keyrings. Seahorse manages both views. Copying files while the daemon writes risks a corrupt set.
Where GNOME Keyring stores this, by platform
~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring
Holds login.keyring and custom keyrings. Managed through Seahorse. Legacy path ~/.gnome2/keyrings applies only to pre 2010 era installs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up GNOME Keyring?
Copy ~/.local/share/keyrings with the session locked and Seahorse closed. That folder holds login.keyring and friends. Test the restore on a spare user before wiping the original.
Which keyring is the default?
Install and open Seahorse (Passwords and Keys). The Login keyring under Passwords is the default. Right click another keyring and pick Set as default to switch.
