Where Does GNOME Maps Store Favorites?

GNOME Maps favorites file, offline index and tile cache spots.

Last updated

Maps keeps favorites and routes in a JSON store under local share. Offline areas add an index pair beside it. Settings live in dconf under the Maps schema.

Tiles belong to the shared shumate cache, not the app. Clearing that tree only costs bandwidth. Pre-46 installs used a differently named places file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Maps places?

Copy places.json with the app closed. Offline index travels beside it. Restoring means putting both back before launch. Tiles rebuild from network as needed.

Can I clear the tile cache?

The shared shumate cache under user cache holds downloaded tiles with an index DB. It is safe to clear for space. Maps refetches on demand.
