Where Does GoboLinux Install Programs?
GoboLinux installs each program in its own folder under /Programs with version subfolders, and classic Unix paths work through symlinks in /System/Links.
Last updated
GoboLinux throws out the classic filesystem layout. Programs live in /Programs with one folder per application and versioned subfolders beneath. There is no /usr/bin full of mixed binaries to hunt through.
Compatibility comes from /System/Links, a symlink farm recreating bin, lib, and friends pointing into /Programs. Old habits and old scripts keep working through those links. When something behaves oddly, check whether you found the real folder or followed a link.
Where GoboLinux stores this, by platform
/Programs
One folder per program with version subfolders. Browse here to see what is installed and which versions coexist. Uninstall by removing the program folder.
/System/Links
Compatibility symlinks recreating classic paths. Scripts expecting /usr/bin resolve through here. Prefer real /Programs paths in new work.
Frequently asked questions
Where is a program installed on GoboLinux?
Open /Programs and look for the program name, then its version folders inside. Each version is self contained, which makes multiple installed versions normal here. Remove the whole version folder to uninstall that version.
Do /usr/bin paths still work?
Yes for almost everything, since /System/Links mirrors the tree with compatibility symlinks like bin and lib. Scripts with hardcoded Unix paths keep working. Use the real /Programs paths in your own scripts to stay correct.
