Where Does Android Health Connect Store Data?

Health Connect keeps fitness data in system-managed on-device storage with API access only. Export and Toolbox routes.

Last updated

Health Connect stores health and fitness records in centralized on-device storage maintained by the system. Apps read and write through the platform API with runtime permissions, never by opening files. There is no workouts folder anywhere on shared storage.

Users touch the data through Settings rather than a file manager. Per-app permissions, data management and scheduled cloud export live there. Developers testing integrations use the separate Toolbox APK, which reads the same store through supported calls. Root Filesystem hunts find nothing stable to rely on.

Where Health Connect stores this, by platform

Android
System-managed on-device storage (no user folder)

Framework module on Android 14 and later, Play Store package on 13 and below. Access is API-only with per-type permissions. User export runs from Settings, Manage data, Backup and restore to a chosen cloud provider as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Health Connect data?

From Settings, Manage data, Backup and restore, enable scheduled export to your cloud provider. The ZIP lands in cloud storage rather than local folders. Per-app access resumes after reinstall once permissions are granted again.

Where are Health Connect files on internal storage?

Nowhere reachable: the store is system-managed and exposed only through the HealthConnectManager API. File-based copies are not a supported migration route. Use the scheduled export or per-app sync instead.

What is the Health Connect Toolbox?

A developer APK sideloaded for testing that reads and writes the same store through supported calls. It helps verify permissions and record shapes before release. Everyday users never need it; Settings covers backup and permissions.
