Where Does Icon Composer Store Projects?

Apple Icon Composer projects and icon sets on Mac, where .iconproj bundles live.

Last updated

Icon Composer (Apple developer tooling) edits layered icon projects that render every size and appearance. Project bundles save wherever you create them, commonly beside the Xcode project.

There is no central library folder. Each .iconproj bundle plus its linked art is the unit. Back up the project folder with sources, since exports alone cannot be re edited.

Where Icon Composer stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Documents/*.iconproj

Project bundles use the .iconproj extension. Keep sources beside the bundle. Preferences follow standard Xcode developer defaults in ~/Library.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move an Icon Composer project?

Keep the .iconproj bundle with its source layers in one project folder. Copy the folder with Xcode closed. Missing sources break renders on the new Mac.

How do I export icons for Xcode?

Use Export from the app into an .xcassets catalog or PNG set. The bundle holds editable layers, not the shipped asset. Commit sources, not just exports.
