Where Are Insurgency: Sandstorm Config Files Located?
Insurgency: Sandstorm keeps all client settings as INI files in one WindowsClient folder. Path plus which file holds graphics tweaks.
Last updated
Every client side setting in Sandstorm is an INI file in a single folder: WindowsClient under Insurgency Saved Config. GameUserSettings.ini carries graphics and the OverrideOptions block that tweak guides edit. Input.ini carries binds.
Treat these files as disposable. The standard fix for broken tweaks is deleting them and letting the game rebuild defaults, then reapplying in game settings first. Marking files read only to freeze tweaks works until a patch or a binds change overwrites them anyway.
Where Insurgency: Sandstorm stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Insurgency\Saved\Config\WindowsClient
GameUserSettings.ini for graphics and scalability groups, Input.ini for binds, Engine.ini for renderer tweaks. Back up the folder before following any tweak guide.
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/581320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Insurgency/Saved/Config/WindowsClient
Same layout mirrored in the Proton prefix for app ID 581320. Edit the INI files with the game closed or it will overwrite your changes on exit.
Frequently asked questions
which file do Sandstorm fps tweaks go in?
GameUserSettings.ini in the WindowsClient folder, mostly the OverrideOptions line and the ScalabilityGroups section at the bottom. Delete the INI files to reset everything if a tweak makes things worse.
why do my Sandstorm settings reset on launch?
A common cause is the game failing to write GameUserSettings.ini on exit. Some players fix it by toggling the file's read only flag, others by clearing the flag from every file in the folder. Try one direction, test, then the other.
