Where Are Apple Journal Entries Stored?
Journal entries sync to iCloud with end to end encryption, appear in encrypted local backups, and export as a ZIP from the app.
Last updated
Journal has no browsable folder of entry files on iOS. The store is a private database synced to iCloud with end to end encryption. Day to day, you read and write only inside the Journal app.
Three exits exist. iCloud sync carries entries to a new iPhone. An encrypted local backup includes them for disaster recovery. Export builds a ZIP of PDFs and assets through the Files app when you need copies outside Apple storage.
Where Apple Journal stores this, by platform
iCloud > Journal (Saved to iCloud)
Default sync store when Saved to iCloud is on. Entries are encrypted in transit and at rest. Check the toggle under your Apple Account iCloud settings.
Files app > AppleJournalEntries.zip
Export target. The app creates AppleJournalEntries ZIP here through the Files picker. Move it wherever you keep long term archives.
Frequently asked questions

Open the journal or All Entries, tap options, then Export. The app builds AppleJournalEntries ZIP and opens Files so you can place it in iCloud Drive or on device.
How do I turn on iCloud sync for Journal?
Go to Settings, then your name, then iCloud, then See All, then Journal. Turn on Saved to iCloud so entries sync across your iPhones.
Are Journal entries in my iPhone backup?
Include them in an encrypted Finder or iTunes backup stored locally. Plain iCloud device backups skip Journal, so the encrypted computer backup is the one that counts.
