Where Are Kerbal Space Program Saves Located?

Kerbal Space Program saves folder on Windows, macOS and Linux, and why it lives inside the game install directory.

Last updated

Kerbal Space Program stores saves inside its own install folder under a saves directory, one subfolder per campaign with persistent.sfs inside. That surprises players who look in Documents or AppData first.

The catch is Steam updates and uninstalls can wipe that tree. Back up saves outside the install folder regularly, especially before version jumps that break mods. Each campaign folder also holds Ships subfolders with your VAB and SPH designs. The GameData folder beside saves holds mods, so copy it alongside campaigns and vessels load with their parts.

Where Kerbal Space Program stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\saves

Replace the Steam root if your library moved. GOG installs use their own folder with the same saves subfolder. Copy campaign folders out before verifying files.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Kerbal Space Program/saves

Same install relative layout. Standalone copies keep saves next to the KSP.app bundle instead. Back up Ships folders alongside persistent.sfs.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Kerbal Space Program/saves

Native Linux builds share the layout. The settings.cfg file sits in the install root beside saves, so grab both for a full migration.

Frequently asked questions

Will verifying files delete my KSP saves?

It can. Verification rewrites the install tree where saves live. Copy the saves folder to Documents first, verify, then copy campaigns back with the game closed.

Where are my rocket designs?

Inside each campaign folder under Ships/VAB and Ships/SPH as .craft files. Copy those with persistent.sfs to move vessels alongside progress.
