Where Does khard Store Config and Contacts?

khard reads address books and display rules from khard.conf in the XDG config dir, with contacts as vCard files.

Last updated

khard keeps exactly one config file: khard.conf in khard's XDG config folder. It names your address books (folders of vCard files), display preferences, vCard version and editors.

Contacts themselves stay outside the config as plain .vcf files wherever your paths point. That split keeps version control clean: track the small conf, sync the contact folders with whatever tool you like.

Where khard stores this, by platform

macOS
~/.config/khard/khard.conf

Address book paths, display, vCard version, editors. Copy the example config from the source tree as a starting point; vdirsyncer pairs well for syncing.

Linux
~/.config/khard/khard.conf

Same file. Contact folders default under ~/contacts-style paths you define; khard never invents storage locations on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Where do my actual contacts live?

Point address book paths in khard.conf at folders of .vcf files (see the bundled example config). khard only reads local vCard stores, so sync them with vdirsyncer first.

How do I move khard to a new machine?

Copy khard.conf plus the contact folders. The config is plain text and the address books are just files, so the whole setup moves without export steps.
