Where Does Kiex Store Elixir Versions?

Kiex builds every Elixir release under ~/.kiex, with installed versions in elixirs and sources in builds.

Last updated

Kiex stores everything inside .kiex in your home directory. Source checkouts compile under builds, and finished installs land in elixirs with one folder per version. Sourcing the Kiex script activates the selected release in your shell.

Erlang itself stays wherever your system put it. Kiex only manages Elixir against that OTP. Deleting a version folder uninstalls it. Exact helper filenames have moved across Kiex releases, so trust kiex list over old guides.

Where Kiex stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.kiex

Installed releases in elixirs, sources in builds. Source the kiex init script from your shell profile. Switching only rewrites the active link.

macOS
~/.kiex

Same home folder tree on Mac. Install Erlang first through Homebrew or kerl. Version folders work the same across both systems.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list Kiex Elixir versions?

Run kiex list to show installed releases and kiex list known for installable ones. Installed versions are folders under .kiex/elixirs. Switch with kiex use, and set a default with kiex default.

Can I keep several Elixir versions with Kiex?

Yes. Install each release you need, since Elixir versions pair with specific OTP releases. Name builds clearly when compiling from source. Keep MIX_HOME and HEX_HOME outside .kiex for stability.
