Where Does Kiro Store Settings and Agents?
Kiro stores global config in a .kiro folder in your home directory and project config in .kiro at the repo root.
Last updated
Kiro splits config into two scopes. Global settings live in ~/.kiro (under your home folder on every OS): agents, steering, skills, hooks, and settings files like settings/mcp.json and settings/cli.json. Project settings live in .kiro at the workspace root and travel with the repo.
That split is the whole backup story. Commit the project .kiro folder and the team shares MCP servers and agents automatically. Copy the home .kiro folder to a new machine for your personal side. Set KIRO_HOME to point the global scope somewhere else for isolated profiles.
Where Kiro stores this, by platform
~/.kiro
Global scope: settings/mcp.json, settings/cli.json, agents/, steering/, skills/, hooks/. Project scope is .kiro/ in each repo.
~/.kiro
Same layout as macOS. Override the location with KIRO_HOME when keeping profiles separate.
%USERPROFILE%\.kiro
Same layout under your home folder. Use %USERPROFILE%\.kiro in Explorer since dot folders are hidden by default.
Frequently asked questions
How do I share Kiro agents with my team?
Put them in the project's .kiro/agents folder and commit it. Global ~/.kiro/agents stays personal. Cloud sessions read the project copy, so no extra sync step is needed.
Can I run two separate Kiro profiles?
Yes. Set the KIRO_HOME environment variable to a different directory before launching. Agents, skills, steering, settings, and sessions all resolve against it.
